Fire Fighting or Damage Control at sea often means that the ship's crew can expect little in terms of external assistance. They must, therefore, be fully trained to maximize the effectiveness of the fire fighting equipment provided on board whilst taking in to consideration the effect of their actions on the ship's stability or breathing environment.

Training systems can be designed and prepared as “mock ups” of the original design or a “used” vessel that may be modified to suit the purpose.

Many effects can be brought in to play to add realism – ships movement, flooding, noise, heat, smoke and of course “real fire”.

The degree of “difficulty” can be varied to suit the level of competence and experience of the Crew.

Safety is paramount and the actions of the “trainees” are monitored at all times to ensure that they do not come to harm in what can be highly realistic and stressful exercises.
